Term Definition
Immunization

Sometimes called vaccination; a shot or injection that protects a person from getting an illness by making the person "immune" to it.

Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT)

A condition in which blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but are not high enough to be classified as diabetes; a risk factor for type 2 diabetes.

Inject

To force a liquid into the body with a needle and syringe.

Insulin

A hormone that helps the body use blood glucose for energy. The beta cells of the pancreas make insulin. When people with diabetes can’t make enough insulin, they may have to inject it from another source.

A condition in which the body's immune system destroys the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. insulin allows glucose to enter the cells of the body to provide energy. Persons with type 1 diabetes must take daily insulin injections.

Partial blocking of the effect of insulin.
