What is a Blood Glucose Meter?

If you are pre-diabetic, or have been diagnosed with type I or type II diabetes, chances are you have been told that you will need a blood glucose meter. What you may be wondering now is, of course, what is a glucose meter? That and several related questions about glucose meters need to be answered before you can begin to know how to buy one or what good they will do you. Diabetic diets, diabetic recipes, and good heart-healthy exercise are all only parts of the process. glucose meters are the missing part.

What Do They Do?

A blood glucose meter works in conjunction with diabetic diets, diabetic recipes, exercise, and medication to help a person keep better control over his or her diabetes. Because blood glucose levels can change so rapidly from hour to hour, blood glucose meters were invented and mass produced for home use for individual benefits. They test your blood glucose levels at home so you do not have to travel to your doctor’s office every time you want or need to have it checked, better enabling you to live with diabetes and controlling it from home.

How Do They Work?

Blood glucose meters test blood glucose levels by taking a small amount of blood onto a layered testing strip, placing it into a machine and allowing the machine to do the work of measuring the blood glucose level. With diabetic recipes, diabetic diet plans, exercise, and medication, glucose meters are invaluable tools. A tiny needle is used to prick the finger of the person and allow a small amount of blood to be released from the fingertip. The blood is placed to the tip of a testing strip, and the strip is then placed into the meter itself. The meter then provides a readout of the blood glucose level within 20 seconds.
