How to Perform a Glucose Blood Test Using a Blood Glucose Meter

Using a glucose meter can be tricky if you do not know what you’re doing. You may have several good diabetes recipes down, as well as your diabetic diet plan and exercise regimen. Your diabetes may only need random monitoring or constant testing – whatever the need, it only takes a few steps to use your glucose meter to get an accurate reading of your blood glucose level.

First

Prepare your materials. Lay out one needle; insert one testing strip into your glucose meter, and open and lay out a band aid and alcohol swab. This will help you jump from step to step quickly and easily without fumbling for materials while you have blood on your fingers, keeping the mess down and testing time fast.

Second

Hold the needle mechanism firmly against your middle or pointer finger tip and press the button to make it eject. Immediately put the needle in a proper storage container and squeeze upward toward the fingertip to bring blood to the surface.

Third

Hold your testing strip with the testing end up against the blood you’ve brought to the surface. With some glucose meters this means you will hold it up there until it beeps telling you it has enough blood to test, or until the entire colored testing spot is covered – either way it shouldn’t require an extreme amount of blood.

Fourth

Retract the testing strip so it can test your blood, and lay it the glucose meter down on a flat surface. While it is giving you your result, use the alcohol swab and band aid to get your fingertip bleeding stopped.

Fifth

Look at and record your blood glucose measurement when the glucose meter displays it to keep track of your readings.
