Things to Consider When Shopping for Glucose Meters

Diabetes Articles - Diabetes Basics

Maybe you were considered to be in the pre-diabetic range before. You’ve exercised, looked up diabetic recipes, and followed a diabetic diet plan for months to try and keep it from happening, but now your doctor suggests you get one of any several blood glucose meters. Shopping for glucose meters can be overwhelming and frustrating if you’re not sure what to consider or look for. There are several things to consider when shopping for glucose meters, and knowing these can help you greatly with your important purchase.

Lifestyle

You may know the ins and outs of your diabetic diet plan, diabetic recipes, and exercise, and only need your glucose meter for those rare times when you’re not sure how it is, or you may not have any idea about diabetic diets or diabetic recipes, don’t exercise, and need to be able to keep up with the pattern of your glucose levels. Talking with your doctor about these lifestyle factors and what type of meter you would best benefit from is a good idea when considering lifestyle when shopping.

Payment

Glucose meters can range from under twenty dollars to over one hundred dollars, so considering how you will pay for your glucose meter and testing strips is extremely important when shopping for your meter. Try checking with your insurance company – many insurance companies will pay for most or all of your diabetic testing supplies. If not, some medical supply stores rent or accept payment plans for the more expensive meters.

Convenience

There are several different types of glucose meters, all with easy to difficult convenience levels. Easy glucose meters allow you to test your blood in other places other than your fingers alone, and use only one machine for everything. More difficult meters require only the finger to be pricked, and require you to remove the test strip between getting the blood on it and sticking it into the meter for measurement.
