8:30 am - no
alarm set today because it’s Saturday. A black paw hits at my arm,
which is hanging off of the side of the bed. I reach over and pet
her head, then roll over. Now a black paw is hitting me on the
back. All right. I reach over on the table and grab my tester. Load
it up with a strip and poke. Countdown, then a number appears in
the screen. 56. I open a straw wrapper and push it in the juice
box. The black dog sighs and leaves the room. I drink the juice and
then fall back to sleep.
9:55 am - I wake up. Stretch. Get out of bed. The black dog is
happy that I’m finally awake. Check blood sugar. Happy that I had
the whole juice box earlier because blood sugar is still a...

Here are six
things I wish people knew about living with Type 1 diabetes:
1. It's complicated.
To some people it seems like if I just watch what I eat, give
insulin, and prick my fingers I will be right as rain. It's not
that easy. Diabetes is complicated. It's a hundred decisions about
"simple things" like eating and exercising. It's constantly
thinking about what's next, what's worked, what hasn't worked, and
what's...

I've been at
it again...logging my blood sugars, carbs and insulin doses for a
second week in a row. This could be habit forming, at least I hope
so. Had a major relapse of my cold, so my activity level was way
off, but since I promised myself no judgements about the numbers, I
continued to enter every number. This week showed a slight downward
trend. Avg BG was 161, 43% in range, 49% high, and 8% low, with a
standard deviation of 65.

Thanks so
much for the comments on my last post. In spite of a power outage
that caused some bad hair this morning, I went to my Endoc appt
today. I received the results of my first A1C after starting on a
CGM two months ago. He does the quickie in office a1c test, and has
even moved the machine that hums and whirs to produce that magic
number into the exam room, which leaves me with sort of a Magic 8
ball type of feeling about the whole...

Disclaimer: I'm not a medical professional, just another
diabetic, so don't take what I do as correct...it's just what I
do.
We had a series of thunderstorms this week, and my 90 year old
father-in-law lost his power. So he came to spend the night with
us. We got up early the next morning, and he was stressed out about
getting home...insisting he needed to take one of his medications
right at 6:45 am. We took him home right...

I really
wanted to participate in D blog week. You know, be a better
citizien of the online diabetes community. But my "want to" got
swallowed up in other aspects of life, and I didn't ever get around
to it. Actually, that's not true. I wrote a post the first day,
then promptly lost it. Anyway, I have really enjoyed reading
everyone's posts, so I thought I'd try to catch up with an
abbreviated version of the week's topics.
What is a...

I work as a
CPA, but do not prepare federal income tax returns as part of my
work. Never have; I just don't want to specialize in that. Around
this time of year, as April 15th approaches, lots of well meaning
friends express concern about "how busy you must be this time of
year". This is in spite of me having told many of them previously
that I don't do taxes. I do not find this to be upsetting at all,
and have plenty of patience and...

Monster Triathlon Race Report (300 meter swim, 12 mile
bike, 3.1 mile run)
A good friend and I finished our first triathlon this morning,
and had a great time doing it. I still don't know our time, but I'm
sure it wasn't particularly fast. Had lots of time to get nervous
before the swim, with 750 of us lining up (sort of). Nice big pool
with 50 meter X 8 foot lanes, and after waiting about 45 minutes
for our turn, my...

I found this article on Team Type 1's website. Inspiring...
Team Type 1 is made up of champions – winners at endurance
cycling who conquer life with Type 1 diabetes at the same time. In
just its second showing in the annual Race Across America (RAAM),
the team took home the victory – beating every other team by more
than three hours.
"Team Type 1’s goal is to prove that by using the tools provided
to manage...
