Currently I’m taking Human Nutrition
in preparation for nursing school. As part of the course,
of course (see what I did there?), we are required to do a
nutritional analysis. This means logging every bit of food and
every minute of exercise to an online site where our teacher can
access it and then analyzing our results.
We have to do it for 4-6 weeks. I’ve been doing it honestly for
two weeks, and let me tell you I am not happy with what I see. I’ve
also been toying with the idea of going gluten and dairy free and
forgetting the red meat for a long time now. I’ve decided to
implement these changes into my diet between now and Thanksgiving.
The goal is to see how I feel...

After twenty years of living with diabetes, it’s not often that
I experience new “firsts” related to the disease. I’ve long since
suffered my first pump frazzle, screwed-up infusion set,
incapacitating low, head-exploding high. I even had my first
glucagon adventure just a few months ago.
But life with diabetes is always full of surprises, right? And
last week, as I was enjoying some seaside Key West scenery, I got
several hundred of them: a swarm of fast-moving insects erupting
from my meter case.
I know!!!!!
My husband, brother-in-law, BFF and I were all on rented beach
cruisers, tooling around the seaport area and gawking at the size
of the cruise ship that was...

One of the most absurdly frustrating things about diabetes is
how much stuff happens when you’re sleeping. Or, you know, trying
to.
Most of us don’t eat when we’re sleeping, or exercise, or take
insulin. Mostly we just lie there and dream about cures and
cupcakes and not being able to find our lockers. But those hours
between 11:00 at night and 7-ish in the morning can be so damn
volatile.
My Continuous Glucose Monitor, as much as I love it, can be part
of the problem. Take Tuesday night — I went to bed relatively
early, all nervous about a huge presentation I had the next day. It
felt like a normal night’s sleep, until I woke up in the morning
and checked my blood...

One the most annoying things about having diabetes is suffering
through the lows. And for me, one of the most annoying things about
suffering through (and recovering from) those lows is eating the
right thing(s).
I go through phases. Jelly Bellies are a longtime favorite, but
they tend to send my blood sugar too high, and once that bag is
open, they’re almost completely irresistible. And I’m a Jelly Belly
purist, so even when my blood sugar is down around, say, 42, you’ll
still catch me eating them one by one, prioritizing in order of
favorite flavors, painstakingly picking out the licorice and root
beer beans. That’s efficient.
Coke or Sprite is another standby, but I’m...

Everyone should be wary of sugary
drinks….
“Women who drank more than two
sugar-sweetened drinks a day had increasing waist sizes, but
weren’t necessarily gaining weight. These women also developed high
triglycerides, and women with normal blood glucose levels more
frequently went from having a low risk to a high risk of developing
diabetes over time.”
(Sugar-sweetened drinks includes beverages such as carbonated sodas
or flavored waters with added sugar.)
“Most people assume that individuals who consume a...

Going into the 2011 Chicago Marathon, I had a very specific goal
in mind – one that I had trained for all Summer long – a 3:50
marathon. I had missed a sub 4 hour marathon my last 2 attempts by
minutes. I knew I could do it, so I pushed myself and set an even
faster goal. Going into the race, even the Saturday before, I felt
comfortable and confident that I could do it. The limiting factor
was going to be how well I could handle the less than ideal warm
temps in Chicago on October 9th. The temperature at the start
was around 64 and pushed into the mid 70′s by the time I finished.
Sounds beautiful, right? Not for a marathon runner.

Not only did I not...

“Everyone Knows Someone Who Needs This
Information!” (TM
The past couple of weeks, we’ve looked at diabetic-friendly
beverages. The following herbal recipe contains 3 anti-inflammatory
herbs. As diabetes contains an inflammatory process, this beverage
should be helpful in making healthy diabetes food choices.
This is also a low fructose recipe as
pineapples only contain moderate amounts. There are serious issues
about how fructose behaves in our bodies (see below) and we should
not ingest any more than 1 – 2 pieces of low-fructose fruits,
daily. Learn more about low fructose foods, here (note the
measurements here are in...

“Everyone Knows Someone Who Needs This
Information!” (TM)
The series which includes diabetic friendly beverages in now in
full swing. These recipes can be used all year and are particularly
effective as real thirst-quenchers in summer. Traditionally, they
were used by farm workers, through the centuries, who did not have
all day access to springs and who had only limited ability to carry
beverages far to work. This replaces electrolytes. It’s a healthier
form of a sports drink, in our modern world.
The last post had a recipe for Switchel, which is one of the
historic names for this beverage. Haymaker’s Punch and Oxymel are
other...
